Techniques for Cleaning Up Dialogue Recordings
When it comes to dialogue editing in Reaper, cleaning up your recordings is the first step toward achieving a quality final product. Here are some techniques you can use to clean up your dialogue recordings:
Remove Background Noise
Background noise can be distracting and take away from the clarity of your dialogue. Use a noise reduction plugin to remove any unwanted sounds.

While many of Reaperâs plugins work very well, Reaperâs noise reduction plugin, ReaFIR is less intuitive than other plugins and leaves unwanted artifacts without a lot of tweaking. I use Izotopeâs RX for denoising, as I have found it the best for surgical cleaning of audio.
Cut Out Unnecessary Audio
Listen to your recording carefully and cut out any parts that donât add value to the conversation. This could include long pauses, stutters, filler words, or irrelevant tangents.
Pay special attention to mouth noises and filler words that may distract or annoy the listener.
Adjust Volume Levels
Make sure all speakers are at a consistent volume level throughout the recording. Use Reaperâs volume automation tool to adjust levels as needed.

The volume automation node is accessed by clicking any track in Reaper and clicking the hotkey: V. This opens an automation line where you can plot or draw volume points that adjust the volume automatically when played in Reaper.
EQ Your Dialogue
Use equalization to enhance the clarity of your dialogue. Boosting the mid-range frequencies can help make voices sound more natural and intelligible.

De-Essing
Sibilance (the hissing sound made by âsâ and âshâ sounds) can be distracting and harsh on the ears. Use Reaperâs de-esser tool to reduce sibilance and make your dialogue sound smoother.
By using these techniques, you can ensure that your dialogue recordings are clean and clear, making it easier for your audience to stay immersed in the story.
Tips for Enhancing Dialogue Clarity and Intelligibility
When it comes to dialogue editing, clarity and intelligibility are key. Here are some tips to help you enhance these aspects of your dialogue recordings:
EQ Matching
If you have tracks coming from different sources and different locations, equalization matching is a powerful tool for shaping the sound of your dialogue. You can use it to learn the EQ patterns from a desired audio track and apply the EQ shaping to the other tracks so they blend cohesively in the mix. For example, you might want to boost the high frequencies to bring out the sibilance in someoneâs voice or cut the low frequencies to reduce boom in order to make the audio tracks match more suitably

I use Voxengoâs Curve EQ for EQ matching. Its algorithms are precise and it is the cheapest paid plugin of its type on the market.
Compress the Dialogue
Compression can even out the levels of your dialogue, improving clarity and comprehensibility in the mix. By reducing the dynamic range of the audio, you can bring up the quieter parts of the dialogue without making the louder parts too loud. This can help ensure that every word is heard clearly and consistently.
Cut Out Unnecessary Words and Phrases
Sometimes, dialogue can be cluttered with unnecessary words or phrases that donât add anything to the conversation. By cutting these out, you can make the dialogue more concise, natural, and easier to follow. Just be careful not to cut out anything important!
By using these tips, you can enhance the clarity and intelligibility of your dialogue recordings and create a more polished final product.
Finalizing Your Dialogue Edit in Reaper
Once you have cleaned up and enhanced your dialogue recordings, itâs time to finalize your edit in Reaper. This involves making sure that all of your edits are seamless and that the dialogue flows smoothly from one line to the next.
One important step in finalizing your dialogue editing in Reaper is to ensure that the levels are consistent throughout the entire project. You can use Reaperâs built-in level meters to monitor the levels and adjust them as needed. Itâs also a good idea to listen to the dialogue through a set of high-quality headphones to catch any inconsistencies or issues that may not be apparent through speakers.
Pacing and timing are also key aspects of finalizing your dialogue edit. This means paying close attention to the timing of each line and ensuring that there are no awkward pauses or overlaps between lines. You can use Reaperâs timeline and zoom tools to fine-tune the timing of each line and ensure that the dialogue flows smoothly.

Finally, itâs important to check your dialogue edit for any errors or issues that may have been missed during the editing process. This includes checking for any pops, clicks, or other unwanted noises. Once youâre satisfied that everything is in order, you can export your final dialogue edit and move on to the next stage of post-production.
